Hundreds Join Alzheimer’s Society Bath Memory Walk

Bath memory walk

Hundreds braved the rain to unite against dementia at the Bath Memory Walk

Jamie Anderson, the son of Thunderbirds creator Gerry Anderson, was one of the hardy souls who took part in the Bath Memory Walk on Sunday, September 3. He cut the ribbon at the start of the second walk organised by the Alzheimer’s Society to raise funds for the devastating disease.

Despite the heavy rain, 1,300 people had registered for the walk in Royal Victoria Park, among them Mayor of Bath, Councillor Ian Gilchrist, who joined Jamie at the starting line.

Jamie has been warmly supporting the Alzheimer’s Society since his father Gerry – whose credits include Thunderbirds, Stingray, Joe 90 and Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons – lost his battle with Alzheimer’s disease in December 2012.

Jamie, who took part in the walk with his dog, Ernie, said: “Dad raised over £1 million for Alzheimer’s Society by doing Memory Walk and I’m determined to continue his legacy by supporting these events.

“I’m delighted to be back in Bath this year to join in Memory Walk again.

“Despite today’s awful weather conditions it’s fantastic to see everyone coming together in this heart-warming show of solidarity.

“Before the walk began I asked people to turn to those next to them and explain why they were walking.

“You find that dementia has touched people’s lives in many ways, and that unites us.

“Dementia can leave people feeling lonely and isolated. But it’s important to know that no one is alone, there is help and support out there.”

There’s still time to join in with your local Memory Walk – raising vital funds for local services supporting those living with dementia right now, as well as funding vital research which will eventually find a cure.

The Gerry Anderson Tribute Fund

In line with Gerry’s wishes, The Gerry Anderson Tribute Fund was set up at Alzheimer’s Society in his memory. If you’re unable to attend a Memory Walk but would like to donate to this very important cause then donations can be made via the “Remembering Gerry Anderson” Just Giving page.
